| Here’s your Sunday morning wrap-up, so you can make sure you didn’t miss out on any of the past week’s columns. Grab your coffee—or something stronger, if necessary. The Week Ahead: Public health is being seriously compromised by this administration, but somehow, these stories always seem to take a back seat. I try to focus on them, and started last week’s The Week Ahead with a focus on Republicans’ failure to hold an out-of-control Robert Kennedy, Jr. in check. A Prosecutor Sues: Maurene Comey sued DOJ and the administration after she was abruptly fired from a job she had done exceptionally well for a decade. She says it’s because her Dad, former FBI Director Jim Comey, is on Trump’s list of enemies. This case has the potential to define how much control a president has over executive branch employees who should have civil service protections. It’s incredibly important: If the administration wins, Trump will have free rein to hire and fire for loyalty. This piece dives into Comey’s lawsuit. Live with Preet Bharara: Preet and I spent discussed Comey’s firing, her lawsuit, and life. You can watch the video or read the transcript if you missed us live. A Not-So Normal Tuesday: AG Pam Bondi told Stephen Miller’s wife Katie, during a podcast, that she was going to go after hate speech. But there’s just one problem: hate speech is protected by the First Amendment. Did the AG really not know that or is she just a sycophant? Both? Don’t Be Afraid To Speak Up: If you’ve only got time to read just one column this morning, please make it this one. The First Amendment is under attack—we’ve progressed to the stage where they’re firing the comedians. I wrote, “Americans speaking up is precisely what this administration doesn’t want. They want us to be overwhelmed by all the stories about all the things. They want us to be intimidated from exercising our right to speak, lest we fall under attack too. So, our job is to make sure that doesn’t happen. ‘Courage is contagious’ is becoming one of our mottos for this administration. Keep focusing on the truth. Keep speaking out.” Please share this column with friends. Our job is to be the heroes of our own story, instead of waiting for someone else to step in. Five Questions with Marissa Rothkopf: Sometimes, protecting democracy can involve baking cookies. Paper Clip Protest: E. Jean Carroll has a good idea, and we can all use it to build and reinforce community. If you feel the need for extra support right now, or want to offer it to those around you, this post is for you. “Show me the man and I’ll find the crime”: Trump wants prosecutions of his enemies, whether a crime was committed or not. It’s a dangerous moment, which is underscored by his replacement of qualified, competent prosecutors with ones who he hopes will do his bidding.
These are complicated legal times, and it’s easy for the truth to get lost in the chaos. Civil Discourse doesn’t just track today’s headlines—it connects them to the legal and political history that explains why they matter. We won’t forget what’s at stake, or let Trump and his allies rewrite the past. You can subscribe to Civil Discourse for free and get clear analysis that helps you see the whole picture, delivered straight to your inbox. If you’re in a position to, your paid subscription helps me devote the time and resources it takes to write the newsletter. That means everyone has access to information they can share with friends and family—a constructive act we can all participate in right now, helping more Americans understand how critical this moment is. We’re in this together, Joyce Share | |
