But is it $300 million nice? When I was told that we were going to a party, I didn’t ask the obvious question: “Is it at the most expensive house in America?” Instead, I took a short walk from downtown with my old boss from Time magazine, Walter Isaacson, who had recently become head of the Aspen Institute. I had flown to Colorado because I knew this was not only my one opportunity to see Aspen but also my one opportunity to see an institute. As we approached the house, I knew right away that it was expensive. But I didn’t think that, two decades later, it would be put on the market for $300 million, the most anyone has ever listed a house for in the U.S. I mean, we walked in without any staff announcing us. When I went to Barbra Streisand’s house in Malibu, I was greeted at the door by a maid in a French maid outfit.
