I shut down my entire company for a month to create SOPs, and it was one of the stupidest things I've ever done.
True story.
I had just read The E-Myth while on vacation, and I was INSPIRED…
(A little too inspired.)
I walked into the Monday all-hands meeting like Moses coming down from the mountain and declared:
"From this day forward, everything shall be SOP'd!"
I shut down the entire company for a month…
- No new projects.
- No new hires.
- No new anything until everything was documented.
The team HATED it.
Half thought they were getting fired…the other half wanted to fire me.
But after 4 weeks (and a near-mutiny) I had it…
…a beautiful stack of color-coded binders filled with checklists, templates, and SOPs.
It looked amazing.
But guess how many times those SOPs were used?
Zero.
Not once.
They gathered dust until we moved offices and finally threw them away.
Now?
We only document "Power Stages"…the 10 - 15 things we do that actually matters (and the stuff we can't afford to screw up).
