They did something to you. They cost you something. They screwed something up. That's annoying, no question. It's expensive. It's a setback.
But why are you making it worse?
This is something both Marcus Aurelius and Seneca talk about. The event, the comment someone made, the mistake, the injury whatever—that's one thing. But now by being angry, bitter, by ruminating on it, by responding impulsively, by becoming like your enemy or antagonist, you are adding to that injury. You are piling costs on top of costs.
Why? Why? You don't control what they did to you. But you do control whether you reach into your pocket, grab your Pause & Reflect Medallion (the one we've been talking about), recite the alphabet…and then move on. You control whether you let it go. You control whether you elevate your heart rate about this. You control whether you let it ruin your mood. You control whether you let it ruin your life!
Look, it's not that you have an anger problem, it's that anger causes everyone problems. When someone wrongs you, that's their mistake—but when you allow that anger to consume you, that's yours.
Our Pause & Reflect Medallion was designed specifically to break this cycle before it starts, to give yourself the chance to respond differently this time. With features like its mirror coating to show you the distorted face of rage that Seneca warned against, and the alphabet exercise taught by the Stoic Athenodorus (learn more about those here), it's your portable reminder to pause, breathe, and choose a better path.
Imagine facing life's frustrations with a newfound calm. No more burned bridges. No more harsh words you later regret. No more energy wasted on things outside your control. That's the power of carrying this simple reminder with you.
