Morning all. Lots of news today. But before we get to it, a reminder - inflation came in higher than expected in TWO inflation reports this week. Prices are rising. Trump’s has re-ignited inflation - on purpose. Higher prices, the new tariffs, economic uncertainty have slowed the economy and job growth has stalled. Due to the big ugly bill ACA premium estimates for next year have skyrocketed. The budget deficit in July was 20% higher (!!!!) than it was a year ago under Joe Biden. For all the bluster and the blather the Dow is only up 3% under Trump. It increased 39% under Biden. And to be clear - faced with these deteriorating economic conditions brought on by his tariffs and the rest of his rancid agenda, last week our idiotic leader choose to dramatically increase tariff rates for most goods imported into the US; meaning that he chose to do further, material harm to our economy and all of us on purpose, by design. It is further evidence of his deepening descent into the authoritarian, imperial madness that we’ve been discussing here all week (here, here).
To add to this sense of failure - Newsom called Trump a “failed President” yesterday - Trump got the worst high-integrity poll of his 2nd term yesterday. The highly respected Pew Research poll clocked in with a 38% approve, 60% disapprove reading. Ruh-roh big orange guy! Here’s the breakdown:

Newsom Leads - Yesterday Governor Gavin Newsom found that “higher gear” we’ve been talking about here and announced a campaign to redistrict California to offset the seats Trump and the Rs will take from Texas. In language that will be very welcome to the Hopium community the Governor said:

When history calls some rise to answer the call, others don’t. Governor Gavin Newsom is answering history’s call. May it inspire others in our pro-democracy movement to follow. For what must happen now is we must take this energy, this passion, this fight and rally the American people to join us in opposing Trump’s broader agenda of sabotage, plunder and betrayal. As we’ve discussed here our Congressional leaders must now join Governor Newsom in crafting a story, a narrative about what is happening, and to make clear what we - proud patriots all - are fighting for. Here are my four pillars of what could become our clear-eyed agenda for the battles ahead: Fight For Democracy And Freedom - We will fight for democracy, for Ukraine, for Europe, for NATO, for our own national security and sovereignty, for maintaining American leadership of the global rules-based order that our party imagined and built after WWII. We will oppose Putin, the selling out of Ukraine and the West, of Trump’s tearing down of the American-led rules based “Four Freedoms” global order and his abandonment of the Constitutional order here in America. End The Inflationary, Destructive And Illegal Tariffs - We will fight to end Trump’s terrible tariffs that are raising prices on every day Americans, slowing the US and global economies, shifting the tax burden from the wealthy to all of us, harming our farmers and small businesses, angering our allies and dramatically undermining the American-led rules based global order. While doing harm these tariffs are also illegal and unconstitutional, the greatest abuse of power by an American President in our history. Together, we must roll them back. Block The Creation Of An Unaccountable Political Police Force Loyal To Trump - We will fight to block the rancid and dangerous expansion of ICE and Trump’s illegal use of the military to forge for himself an unaccountable domestic political police force loyal to only to him and not the Constitution. Need to be all in on this one peeps. Stand Up For Science, Higher Ed, Our Public Health - We will fight to stop the ongoing assault on science, higher education, and our public health. We will oppose the escalating attacks on our universities, the gutting of our global scientific leadership, the dangerous undermining of vaccines and preventative health, and the cutting of the ACA and Medicaid. These authoritarian attacks are making our country poorer, our companies less able to compete, are dramatically undermining the health of the American people and violate our cherished First Amendment rights. Together, we have to keep finding a higher gear and growing the circle of defiance as a leading group of scientists did yesterday in calling for Robert Kennedy’s removal from his position; as Gov Pritzker did by giving the Texas Senators safe harbor, and as the Texas Senators did in their original act of rigtheous defiance; as the House Democrats did in getting the House Republicans to break from Trump and subpoena the Epstein files from the DOJ; as Mayor Bowser did this morning in rejecting the Trump Administration’s illegal, tinpot dictator attempt to replace DC’s police chief, Pamela Smith and the broader occupation of DC. Courage can become contagious, my friends, and we need all of our leaders standing and fighting now as Governor Newsom did for all of us this week. It is time now. For as Robert Frost so powerfully told us “the best way out is through.”
Trump Betrays - Let us count the ways: Trump is betraying the country and the promise he made in his campaign to lower prices and improve people’s lives through his four part agenda of sabotage, plunder and betrayal - the enormous tariffs, the big ugly bill, mass deportations and the war on science, our universities our public health. He is doing material harm to our economy, our public health and all of us, and leaving this country far poorer and less healthy, with increasingly dangerous levels of debt and far less capable of competing against other nations. Trump is betraying the country through his illegal and unconstitutional assault on the Federal government itself; his vaporization of entire agencies without Congressional assent; his illegal and unconstitutional tariffs; his sending of innocent people to foreign gulags without due process; his attempt to create a political police force loyal to him and not the Constitution; his outrageous trampling of the sovereignty of cities and states and our Constitutionally protected rights; and his savage attack on the Congress and our democracy in 2021. No man in all of our history has done more to betray our democracy, our Constitutional order, the very idea of America itself. There has been no man, and no leader, less American than Donald Trump. Trump is betraying the country today in Alaska by allowing a genocidal war criminal whose central foreign policy goal is to weaken America to be given a meeting with our government on our land. He is betraying the country by his abandonment of our allies, Ukraine and our American-led, “Four Freedoms” liberal order that he like Putin seems so eager to destroy. He is betraying the country by lowering our guard through the weakening of American soft power, by appointing quislings to run our military and by powering down our cyber defenses. He is betraying the country by imperiously levying tariffs on the nations and the people of the world without their consent, and turning them, deservedly so, against this once great nation. Donald Trump is betraying the country by illegally and unconstitutionally lining his pockets, soliciting and accepting bribes, shaking down foreign governments and US corporations, building himself a great big ball room and charging the American people $1 billion for his ridiculous plane. Donald Trump is betraying the country and the people of the world be undermining the existential energy transition that was underway, and that America had become the global leader of. His attacks on clean energy and elevation of fossil fuels is a betrayal of our workers and families today, and all the people of the world tomorrow. Simply, Donald Trump is a traitor to America, and it is time for us to say so.
Friends we must get very angry now, and very, very loud. Let us lead this movement into its next chapter, and together into finding a “higher gear.” The future of our kids and our grandkids are on the line, and we need to leave all out there on the playing field for them.
