Fighting Trump's Madman Agenda Of Sabotage, Plunder and Betrayal And Some Coffee with The ContrariansThis August we must rest and recharge, but we must also collectively find a higher gear
Morning all. Got a few things for you today: Coffee With The Contrarians - Starting off today with a interview I did last Thursday with Jennifer Rubin and Norm Eisen for their morning “Coffee With The Contrarians” live show on Substack. It is above. We cover a lot of ground in the 30 minute discussion - Kamala Harris’s decision not to run for Governor of California, the fight in Texas and the need for us to learn how to win in more red states and red places, the terrible tariffs and more. Norm reports in on on his important legal work challenging Trump and we end with things we are looking forward to. Get to it when you can. It’s a thoughtful discussion about our current moment. A reminder that can find all of our interviews/podcasts on the Hopium site under Podcast and on YouTube, Apple Podcasts and Spotify too. Lots of great stuff in there for you to check out this August. The Terrible Tariffs Take Effect Thursday, More Econ Alarms Blaring - I had intended to write a morning post with many small bits today - growing GOP worries about their collapse with Hispanic voters, an update on the national redistricting battle, the new article about “Mothership” and deep corruption in fundraising tactics on our side, Stand Up For Science’s new 31 days campaign to ensure science is funded in the coming fiscal year 2026 budget - but I think we need to stay focused today on the two big fights in front of us - countering Trump’s 1) rancid and reckless agenda of sabotage, plunder and betrayal 2) escalating, traitorous efforts by this 34 times felon and sex offender to end American democracy and make himself an unaccountable czar, a tyrant, a dictator - anything but an American President. For as we say here it is easy to chase the new and lose sight of what’s important, and as I started writing today I felt that I wasn’t diving into what really mattered most today. So here goes…… I think a central reason there is broad disappointment in the pro-democracy movement right now is there is a sense that our leaders are not adequately recognizing, articulating and organizing around the actual threat we face. That while we have had successes, and are working hard, the sum is not greater than the parts; we have no big animating call to action, no core narrative we are working around. That we seem small when we need to be big. That there is too much business as usual and not enough fight. There there is politics when what we need is patriotism - unrelenting, full-throated, deeply courageous, throw the consultants and ad testing overboard, old fashioned American patriotism. They have Make America Great Again. What do we have? “Make sure 15 million don’t lose their health insurance”….. Seems good, but not what is required now, don’t you think? This August as we rest up and recharge we must also work collectively to find a higher gear; tell a bigger story; develop a language, a narrative, a rallying cry and a battle plan commensurate with the deeply dangerous moment we find ourselves in. I got this to place this morning a few ways…… First, I’ve been inspired by the fight, grit and leadership we are now seeing in what is becoming a new national crusade - the big redistricting battle, one that is going to involve The Terminator it now appears. Leaders across the country are stepping up, fighting for our democracy, and doing what is required of them now. It has been great to see. Next, I was inspired by our willingness to take on the Epstein fight, something that in the past we would have been told not to do for it is a “distraction” from “kitchen table” issues: Next, I was driven here this morning by this remarkable article in Politico, CBO: Republican megabill to $4.1t, due to higher borrowing costs:
As we discussed recently with Rob Shapiro Trump’s economic agenda of tariffs, the big ugly, mass deportations and ending of US global scientific and academic leadership will not only slow the economy, make us less prosperous, raise prices, create labor shortages that will hold back farmers and small businesses, severely damage our health care system and the nation’s health, encourage corny capitalism and unprecedented corruption it has the potential - as the economy slows, interest rates rise and our debt spirals out of control - to destroy the fiscal integrity of the United States and unacceptable levels of control to our largest debtor, China. It is essential that during this August recess our Congressional leaders develop a far more comprehensive indictment of Trump’s entire agenda, not just the impacts of his big, ugly legislation. America is going down a deeply dangerous economic path and we need to make opposing it central to everything we do. Next, I was driven here this morning by this powerful Twitter thread from economist and author Anders Aslund that begins like this: Next, I was driven here by a totally off the wall, batshit crazy interview Trump gave on CNBC this morning where among other things he claims that the EU is giving Trump, him and him alone, $600 billion to invest in the US as he sees fit as part of their “trade deal.” This is yet another clear, take the keys away, 25th Amendment moment on something that matters to us and the entire world. Trump has totally lost his mind, and you could see the anchors struggle to maintain composure throughout the interview: Next, I was driven here this morning by this brave woman in a Nebraska town hall last night: Next, I was driven here this morning by this incredible Rachel Maddow segment on MSNBC last night: We’ve tried here to help our family find a higher gear this year, to understand what is required of us now. Our Letter to America and Resolutions Project speak to this need. Our many talks and daily posts have tried to create words and understandings that speak to that need. Our work here - calling our electeds, supporting our candidates, showing up at protests, being loud and proud in all the ways we do - all speak to that need. But we as we rest and recharge this August let us commit, together, to doing everything we can when we get back here in September to keep helping our pro-democracy movement and national leaders find a higher gear. Six months in we know who he is. He has told us that. I agree with Rachel Maddow - the biggest story now is not about him, it becomes about us, and what we are going to do to turn the tide against Trump’s ongoing agenda of sabotage, plunder and betrayal….. Now, proud, plucky, patriots all…… Let’s Get To Work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Support Hopium’s Priority Candidates And Party Committees - A reminder that Election Day, 2025 is a little more than three months away and early voting starts in Virginia in less than two months - September 19th! As background learn about 1) our big recommendations to the family coming out of the 2024 elections 2) the many important wins we had together last cycle 3) my latest thinking on where we are and the path forward for the Hopium community. Donate, volunteer, learn more about our candidates and opportunities here. I consider all these options must dos for anyone serious about winning this year and next year...
Our updated fundraising goals are now for the end of the year, December 31st, except for the 2025 races, which are now for Election Day, 2025. We can do this people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our Recommended Actions - We are prioritizing three actions today. You can get our full list of recommended actions here. Let’s get to it: 1 - Call your Senators and Rep To Demand They Rescind Trump’s Terrible Tariffs - Congress simply must take back its tariff authority that Trump has illegally and unconstitutional seized and dangerously abused. It is time now for to rescind these terrible and destructive madman tariffs. 2 - Bring “Resolutions Of Condemnation” To Your Community - Inspired by the tactics of our Founders learn about how Hopium members are advancing “Resolutions of Condemnation” in their communities across the country and consider bringing this initiative to your state, country or city/town. Remarkably, members of this community are now advancing 50 resolutions projects in 20 states. Can we get to all 50 states by the fall election? Our newly updated Resolutions page includes a new chat for folks to report in on their progress or seek counsel from those interested in launching a resolutions project in their community. This is one way to fight back against Trump’s unprecedented abandonment of our Constitutional order. 3 - Grow Hopium And This Wonderful Community Of Proud, Plucky, Patriots - We’ve set a goal of trying to grow the Hopium community from the 152,000 we are now to 175,000 by Election Day, 2025. Do what you can to encourage your friends, family and colleagues to become a summer subscriber to Hopium, free or paid. If each current paid subscriber brings in just one new subscriber this summer we will hit our goal. To encourage the growth of our community annual paid subscriptions are 10% off through Labor Day. Use that link to buy gift or group subscriptions, and join our new referral rewards program too. Finally, please self-report your activities to our daily paid subscriber chat. These reports help inspire all of us to do more and fight harder! Been impressive to see how many of you remain involved in local, in person protests of all kinds in your communities. Keep it up!!! Keep working hard all. Proud to be in this fight with all of you, and a fight it truly is - Simon
