Six men were found dead Wednesday at Prospect Valley Dairy in Keenesburg, about 35 miles northeast of Denver, in what authorities suspect was a lethal gas-exposure incident.

The deceased include a father and his teenage son, a 17-year-old high school student. Preliminary findings by the Weld County Coroner's Office show all six died of gas exposure in a confined space.

Industry experts say hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas generated by decomposing manure, is a known danger on dairy operations, though an incident of this scope is rare.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has opened an investigation into the incident, which could take up to six months.

State inspectors found about 20 decomposing bodies behind a hidden door at Davis Mortuary, a funeral home in Pueblo, on Wednesday.

Davis Mortuary is owned by Brian Cotter, the Pueblo County coroner, who told authorities he may have given fake ashes to next of kin while keeping some bodies for up to 15 years.

It was the mortuary's first inspection under newly adopted rules meant to better regulate Colorado's funeral home industry, whose minimal oversight has led to several prior crimes.

Authorities are still investigating the property and have yet to file charges. Gov. Jared Polis has called for Cotter's immediate resignation.

Article Icon 1Ranger Charged in Stabbing Hoax

Authorities arrested a Colorado Parks and Wildlife ranger who reported being stabbed in Staunton State Park last week after determining the incident was an "elaborate hoax."

Callum Heskett, 26, faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges for the allegedly false report, which triggered a widespread manhunt, visitor evacuations, and school lockdowns as Heskett was airlifted to a hospital for surgery.

Police say inconsistencies in Heskett's statements, along with conflicting and questionable evidence, made it "clear" his story was false. Investigators believe he stabbed himself.

Heskett remained under medical care Thursday when police issued a warrant for his arrest. He'll be transferred to Jefferson County Jail upon his release.
