Tonight, I’m turning in early, despite—or perhaps because of—all that’s going on. So many of you have been writing asking for chicken pictures that I thought we’d do that tonight, and then take up serious developments like the impending erasure of the Department of Education and the ongoing attacks on federal judges—Stephen Miller, not to be outdone by Elon Musk, glommed on today.

It’s almost spring here, and the chickens are ready for it. Most people don’t realize that chickens can fly, but some of them are quite good at it, and Ruth especially likes cherry blossoms.

Pepper is the wrong kind of chicken to fly—Silkies have a different wing structure—but she and Ruth are buddies, and she was looking at her longingly, so I helped out.

Red was busy supervising from below.

I am very grateful for the work the chickens are doing for me right now with all of their foraging in the dirt. They are helping me get the backyard ready to plant. I have a new lilac bush that’s going into the ground (lilacs don’t really grow in Alabama, but I persist with that fantasy) and I’ll let the chickens pick the spot and plant it wherever they dig me the best hole.
