"Convince yourself that everything is the gift of the gods," Marcus Aurelius reminds us, "that things are good and always will be." And they didn't just mean you should do this on special days like Thanksgiving (which the U.S. is celebrating today). They meant you should do it every day. Of course, it's wonderful to give thanks for the obvious blessings: our families, our health, the food on the table. But Stoicism urges us to go further, to find gratitude in the less obvious, the uncomfortable, even the painful. It's a challenge to find meaning in our struggles, in the bad things that have happened to us. That nagging pain in your leg—thank you, it's making me take things slow.
That difficult client—thank you, it's helping me develop better boundaries.
That damage from the storm—thank you, the damage exposed a more serious problem I'm now solving.
That mistake you made—thank you, for reminding me to be more careful and teaching me a lesson. This is what Epictetus meant when he said every situation has two handles. We can grab onto resentment—or gratitude. We can focus on obstacles—or look closer and see opportunities. Gratitude shifts our perspective and transforms even the harshest realities into tools for growth. So today, as you gather with family or friends for Thanksgiving—or any other celebration—take a moment to appreciate the obvious gifts in front of you. But as the moment passes and life resumes its daily rhythm, commit to carrying gratitude with you always. Not just for the easy or joyful moments, but for all of it. Every day.
