Article Icon 1Rocket Plant Breaks Ground in Hurt

Italian rocket maker Avio broke ground Tuesday on a $500 million plant in the Pittsylvania County town of Hurt that’s expected to create more than 1,500 jobs.

The 900,000-square-foot facility will build solid rocket motors for missile systems, tactical propulsion, and commercial space. Avio expects to open it during the first quarter of 2029.

The jobs will pay about $81,000 a year, well above the county average, on the 800-acre site of a Burlington Industries mill that closed in 2007.

Avio USA chief James Syring, a retired Navy vice admiral, said many states courted the company, but it picked Virginia for this area’s “access to workforce and trade.” Gov. Abigail Spanberger called it one of the largest economic development projects in the region’s history.

Article Icon 1Wolfe Freed after 25 Years

A judge vacated Justin Wolfe’s 2002 murder conviction Monday, freeing him from a Prince William County jail after 25 years, including 13 on death row.

The admitted triggerman, the only witness tying Wolfe to the March 2001 killing of Daniel Petrole Jr., recanted years ago and swore Wolfe had no part in it. Wolfe, who always maintained his innocence, pleaded guilty to marijuana distribution and no contest to criminal solicitation in a deal for time served.

Federal courts had earlier found the original prosecution engaged in misconduct, citing suppressed evidence and coerced testimony under a previous commonwealth’s attorney.

Current Commonwealth’s Attorney Amy Ashworth called the resolution a “just and appropriate outcome” to a case mishandled by a prior administration. Petrole’s family said current prosecutors reached “a resolution that we can accept.”

Article Icon 1Christian Clubs Sue Virginia State University

Two Christian student groups at Virginia State University have sued the school in federal court, saying a new campus ministry policy strips them of registered club status because of what they believe.

Women of Victory and Bethel Campus Fellowship say the August policy folds student-led ministries into VSU’s Campus Ministries office, where the campus minister approves gatherings and a faculty advisor must attend everything from Bible studies to a dorm pajama party. It also ended Sunday rides to a nearby church.

The clubs say the policy exempts the Muslim Students Association, the Community Faith Alliance, and secular groups. VSU, which describes Campus Ministries as support for students’ spiritual life, has not commented publicly on the suit.

The case was filed Sept. 24 in Richmond, and no hearing is set.

Before You Spend Money on Peptides, See What Your DNA Says

Peptides have become one of the biggest topics of conversation in anti-aging, longevity, weight loss, recovery, and muscle growth. But here’s the problem: the same peptide may not work the same way for everyone.

The Pep Report analyzes more than 710,000 genetic markers and compares them against published research to help identify which peptides and nutraceuticals your biology may support.

And because your DNA doesn’t change, you only need to test it once. A simple cheek swab gives you genetic information you can reference as you explore different options, rather than spending money blindly and hoping something works.

The Flyover readers automatically get 10% off, no code needed. See which peptides match your DNA.

Article Icon 1Drivers Welcome Gas Tax Break

Georgia drivers welcomed relief at the pump as the state's latest gas tax suspension went into effect.

Motorists called the break a welcome reprieve after weeks of rising costs, with the 33.3-cent-per-gallon suspension running through Oct. 29.

The statewide average price fell to $4.05 a gallon Wednesday, down from $4.19 on Monday and below the national average of $4.43, though relief is arriving slowly at some pumps.

Political observers say the suspension could impact the Nov. 3 midterm elections, including races for governor and U.S. Senate. In the governor's race, both Republican Rick Jackson and Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms said they support the move.

A cushioned pool-deck bench may have helped a 21-year-old University of Georgia senior survive a fall from an eighth-floor window onto a second-floor pool deck in Athens.

Kristin Sargent fell through a window screen while dancing on a couch at the Rambler Athens, and police noted the bench's armrest had snapped off on impact.

Sargent is awake and recovering in intensive care with multiple broken bones, saying she couldn't believe she was alive, according to her father.

Newly released 911 calls capture friends' frantic pleas for help, and police say the evidence so far points to an accident.

Sailors are reminiscing about their time aboard the USS Georgia as the submarine prepares to leave the fleet.

Crew members recalled decades of camaraderie aboard the Ohio-class guided-missile submarine, which is being inactivated after more than 40 years of service.

The vessel completed its final patrol in July before beginning the inactivation process at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay near St. Marys. Full inactivation is set for next year.

Originally built as a Cold War ballistic missile submarine, the Georgia was converted to carry guided missiles and deploy Navy SEAL teams.
