| | Thursday, February 5, 2026 | | | Good Morning! On this day in 1880, The Fairplay Flume, a Park County newspaper founded in 1879, reported rumors of "rich discoveries of placer and gold quartz diggings" in the Blue Mountains, about 170 miles southwest of Rico. Denver reported a record eight e-scooter deaths in 2025, a small fraction of the nearly 2,000 scooter-related injuries recorded by Denver Health. Find out more in Around Colorado. A quick note from The Colorado Flyover team: This week, our entire Flyover team is doing something we don't get to do very often: we're all flying into Colorado to be in the same room together.
Because our writers, developers, and sales folks are spread across the country, most of our work happens over Slack, Zoom, and email. This fly-in gives us the chance to plan, debate, whiteboard, and—importantly—get to know each other better as humans. We'll be spending our time talking about how to make The Colorado Flyover even better for you in 2026.
As a result, a few of our editions this week may be a bit more abbreviated than usual. That's intentional—and temporary. We'll be back to our regular edition on Monday.
And while we're together, we'd love your input. If there's something you love, something you'd like more of, or something we could improve, hit reply and tell us. Many of our best ideas come directly from readers like you. Thanks for reading, and thanks for being part of The Flyover community.

| Officials Anticipate Water Restrictions On Jan. 31, the Colorado River Basin and South Platte Basin snowpacks ranked third-worst and second-worst on record, respectively, raising concerns about a dry water year and long-term impacts. Experts warn that the state's reservoir levels could decline later this year if dry conditions persist. Nathan Elder, Denver Water's manager of water supply, said the utility is preparing for the "strong potential of water restrictions this year" and encouraged residents to proactively curb water use. Meanwhile, the warm, dry winter continues to hinder recreation and local economies. Some ski resorts have had to cut workers' hours, and Summit County has seen a surge in food pantry demand. As March and April are historically Colorado's snowiest months, there's still a chance for a late-season turnaround, though full recovery would require some of the biggest storms on record. | Wolf Dies in Collaring Attempt One of Colorado's reintroduced gray wolves died Jan. 28 during a routine capture and collaring operation in Routt County, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) said Tuesday. The wolf, a 3-year-old breeding male in the King Mountain Pack, was found unresponsive after capture, CPW said. Staff tried to resuscitate the animal but determined it had died. CPW tries to keep at least two wolves collared per pack. In this case, the adults' collars had low batteries and needed replacement. The agency successfully collared the adult female and one pup. Results from a necropsy are pending. This death brings the number of translocated wolves that have died since the program began to 12 of 25. | | | |
