| Every week seems to feel like the worst week yet, but this one was truly unsettling, marked by the horrific shooting death of Renee Good in Minneapolis by an ICE agent. As we continue to try and process that incident, people who have tried to sit on the sidelines until now are finally being forced to consider what has happened to our country. It’s a good, if solemn, moment to have difficult conversations with those around you and to ask if this is what they voted for, and most importantly, what they’re going to vote for in 2026. Here’s the highlight reel of the past week’s posts and events. Grab a cup of coffee and get ready to catch up on anything you may have missed. Live with Jake Sullivan and Jon Finer: This was an amazing live chat with President Biden’s National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, and his Deputy National Security Advisor, Jon Finer, following the unexpected attack on Venezuela. Their deep knowledge of national security issues helped bring clarity to the evolving situation. The Week Ahead: Heading into the fifth anniversary of January 6, there was pressure mounting on Donald Trump, including from Jack Smith’s recent testimony on Capitol Hill and DOJ’s failure to release the full Epstein files. Given that context, we’re forced to consider whether Trump’s attack on Venezuela is, at least in part, intended as a distraction. Senator Cory Booker paved the way as it appeared Congress might finally be prepared to show a little spine and tell Trump “No.” Live with Virginia Senator Mark Warner: Senator Warner gave us 20 minutes of his time during a busy day to share his concerns about the administration’s politicization of intelligence and how that makes us less safe as a nation. We talk a lot about the consequences of the politicization of the Justice Department. The consequences in the intelligence community are similarly serious and, as a member of the Gang of 8, Senator Warner was able to explain this clearly, and also help us understand the bad precedent Trump is setting in Venezuela. January 6 Again: We looked at Trump’s “New Lost Cause” narrative, as he recasts January 6 insurrectionists as heroes, in stark contrast to Jack Smith’s testimony and what we all saw and heard with our own eyes and ears on that day. The Dangerous Revision of Jan 6 History on the Official WH Website: Trump’s attempt to rewrite the history of January 6 is live on the White House website, and it’s worthy of Orwell’s 1984. As citizens, it is critical that we don’t let this false narrative prevail. Live with Steve Vladeck: Georgetown Law professor Steve Vladeck joined us to discuss the legality of Trump’s actions in Venezuela and his stated intention to buy Greenland. But we also touched on the heartbreak all decent people share tonight over the unnecessary death of Renee Nicole Goode at the hands of ICE agents in Minneapolis. “You gonna murder someone else? You can’t kill us all, Nazis.”: Even before the tragic death of Renee Good at the hands of ICE agents, I had been tracking the persistent pattern of abuses by ICE and how little concern this administration has about them. We look at these incidents along with this week’s tragedy. About that Stephen Miller Interview: He’s pompous. He’s a lot of other things. But Stephen Miller’s ideas have informed where Trump is headed since 2016. If you want to know what issues Donald Trump is being exposed to and how he’s being steered toward what he’ll do next, keep your eye on Miller—we do just that as we break down his recent interview with Jake Tapper. Ten Questions with Marc Elias: As we enter the midterm election season, voting rights guru Marc Elias shares his insight into the greatest challenges we will fact to holding free and fair elections in 2026 and what we can do about. Marc joins us later this week for a Substack Live to discuss this further. A Little Good News on a Saturday Night: A federal judge in Boston interrupted the administration’s efforts to force 15,000 people with legal status in the U.S. to leave by prematurely revoking their parole just days before Christmas. We discuss what immigration “parole” is and learn who these people are. The question we’re left with is, how does this possibly make us any safer?
These are complicated legal times, and it’s easy for the truth to get lost in the chaos. Civil Discourse doesn’t just track today’s headlines—it connects them to the legal and political history that explains why they matter. We won’t forget what’s at stake, or let Trump and his allies rewrite the past. You can subscribe to Civil Discourse for free and get clear analysis that helps you see the whole picture, delivered straight to your inbox. If you’re in a position to, your paid subscription helps me devote the time and resources it takes to write the newsletter. That means everyone has access to information they can share with friends and family—a constructive act we can all participate in right now, helping more Americans understand how critical this moment is.
