It might be coming with a peanut-butter raise later this year. What on God's green earth is that, you might ask? It's a compensation approach where companies spread pay hikes evenly across the workforce, regardless of merit. It's not nearly as tasty as the name makes it sound, and 44% of companies are planning to use the method in 2026, according to Payscale, with the average bump hovering at 3.5%. STARTING UP A knee implant startup gives young patients a leg up ❌  The problem: Restoring damaged cartilage in the knees of young, active patients is difficult, often involving temporary fixes that fail over time and lead to repeated surgeries.  💡  The pitch: Nanochon built Chondrograft, a minimally invasive implant meant for individuals who don't yet need a total knee replacement but whose cartilage damage is too severe for simple lifestyle modifications. The implant gives patients immediate weight-bearing abilities and motion — cutting out the recovery time of many existing repair options.  🚀  The outlook: Fresh off a $4.1m raise, Nanochon is preparing its first human trials in Canada to make the leap from lab work to real patients.   NEWS FLASH   Delivery bot startup Serve Robotics — you may have seen its bots wheeling along sidewalks ferrying food orders — announced its acquisition of Diligent Robotics in a $29m deal. Diligent builds Moxi, a bot that delivers items around hospitals. Serve intends to scale Diligent's fleet and its own platform across new industries. Duetti — a startup that buys the rights to, manages, and promotes indie artists' music catalogs — has now raised $635m+. So far, Duetti has partnered with 1.1k+ artists across 40+ countries. It'll use its latest funds to expand its tech and global reach.  Another is a software startup that helps retailers manage unsold or excess merchandise, providing real-time insights and, ideally, finding a more profitable solution than liquidation. It just raised $2.5m. Everyone's a critic: University of Alaska Fairbanks student Graham Granger was charged with criminal mischief after allegedly eating at least 57 of the 160 small images that made up fellow student Nick Dwyer's artwork because it was AI generated. Dwyer's piece was an exploration of AI psychosis.  FROM OUR FRIENDS AT MINDSTREAM This century's most groundbreaking piece of hardware — maybe    After a year-plus of teases, OpenAI shared its clearest signal yet on when its first hardware product might arrive.    The company said it's "on track" to introduce its first device before the end of 2026 — though what the product actually is remains a mystery.    Allegedly, multiple prototypes have been tested and branding hiccups overcome.    Remind us to steal this stalling playbook for next time a project is due at work. 👉  Read more on Mindstream   THE BIG IDEA Sleep coaches are moving beyond babies and helping adults Sleep has become a booming business, with myriad startups claiming they have just the device, app, or supplement to achieve a good night's rest. You could drop several grand on Eight Sleep's "sleep system," which changes temperatures and elevation while playing white noise. You could check into a sleep hotel or listen to an adult bedtime story. You could even build a "sleep stack," which, according to tech bros interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, includes a variety of air purifiers, posh pajamas, sleep masks, and ear plugs. Or, you could just be a baby about it…   … and hire a sleep coach. Sleep coaches or consultants typically offer sleep training for children — babies or toddlers who wake up often, resist naps or bedtime, or are having trouble adjusting to sleeping in their own bed or crib. Yet sleep coaches have increasingly expanded to help all of us overstimulated, anxiety-addled adults. Wired spoke to one sleep consultant who expanded her practice to adults after noticing how exhausted the parents of children she treated were. She typically offers 12 sessions over three months to figure out why people are having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both, and comes up with a plan that goes beyond the usual sleep hygiene tips (blackout curtains, white noise, etc.). For example, she found one client was eating too late at night. Another drank too much water, resulting in midnight bathroom trips.  The American Council of Exercise recently announced a new Sleep & Recovery Coach Course with sleep educator Nick Lambe, designed for personal trainers and fitness pros who want to add sleep and recovery science to their offerings. Of course, like every profession…   ... robots are coming. Sleep tracking app Sleep Cycle launched Luma, an AI-powered sleep coach, in December. It uses data from the app to offer insights and recommendations for better sleep. Garmin added its own Sleep Coach to select watches. It recommends how much sleep you need based on everything else it tracks.  That said, would any of these robots tell you to move the flat-screen TV out of your bedroom because "your bed is for sex and sleep only" like sleep coach Ingrid Prueher? Because we appreciate that kind of bluntness.    🔗 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED   It's just semantics. No, seriously: Simple semantics increased AI citations by 642% in this experiment. NEWSWORTHY NUMBER Weeks it takes for the Holy Carp dropper — a new plant-based soy sauce container by Australian design studio Heliograf — to decompose. By contrast, the plastic to-go containers that soy sauce typically comes in, like the rectangular packets common in the US and the fish-shaped droppers popular in Australia, can take centuries to break down.
