The Christian Martyr Behind Valentine's Day

On Valentine's Day, we celebrate love with chocolates, cards, and gifts to show affection. But how much do we know about the man this day is named after?

The story of how a Christian priest named Valentinus inspired this holiday begins with soldiering, marriage, and a cold-hearted emperor.

During the third century, the Roman emperor Claudius II (also called "Claudius the Cruel") struggled to recruit soldiers as they were required to fight for at least 25 years. Many young men were unwilling to leave their loved ones, so Claudius banned all marriages and engagements.

In response, couples went underground with the help of Valentinus, who secretly married soldiers to their betrothed. Eventually, Valentinus was caught and condemned for treason. He was beaten with clubs and killed on February 14 around the year 269.

More than 200 years later, Pope Gelasius established the holiday on February 14 to honor the courageous faith of Valentinus.

Whatever Happened To...

Whatever happened to CB radio?

In the mid-'70s, citizens band radio (CB) felt like the internet you could hold in your hand. For the price of a rig and an antenna, anyone could join the chatter—no operator, no long distance, no permission.

It started for practical reasons: truckers swapping road intel, weather warnings, and bear reports in real time. Then America discovered the romance—handles, call signs, and a rolling fraternity stitched together by Channel 19.

Pop culture poured gasoline on it. Movies like Convoy helped fuel a trucker-song boom, and endless "breaker breaker" and "10-4" catchphrases turned CB into a national inside joke—part rebellion, part neighborliness, part performance.

For a few years, the airwaves were crowded with good-natured chaos and CB slang terms: late-night laughs, flirtation, tall tales, and the small thrill of being heard by strangers you'd never meet. It made loneliness feel temporary.

And then it thinned out. The novelty wore off, interference and noise piled up, and newer, clearer tools arrived—cell phones for direct calls, later the internet for wireless communities that didn't fade at the county line.

CB didn't die so much as shrink back to its roots. Truckers still use it, off-roaders still rely on it, and hobbyists still chase that warm hiss and sudden voice from nowhere.

Today, the craze lives mostly as nostalgia: chrome microphones, whip antennas, and a slang dictionary that instantly time-travels you to a dashboard at dusk. Key up, listen, and for a second, the 1970s answer back.
