Computer use for leisure skyrocketed 200% since 2003, while time spent caring for grandchildren doubled, pet care increased 80%, and walking and exercise rose nearly 40%. Activities that declined the most include attending arts and entertainment events (down 55.6%), hosting social gatherings (down 55.6%), and reading for personal interest (down 39.8%), as older adults increasingly shifted toward digital behaviors and at-home religious practice over formal worship. The changes reflect longer life expectancies, aging-in-place trends, and lingering behavioral shifts from the pandemic, with 91% of adults 50+ now owning smartphones and 72% owning laptops as of 2024.
