Duke University researchers have launched a groundbreaking clinical trial within a 4.5-mile radius in Forsyth County, deploying drones to deliver automated external defibrillators (AEDs) during real 911 calls for cardiac arrest.

This first-of-its-kind program in the U.S., led by cardiologist Dr. Monique Starks, dispatches drones alongside traditional emergency medical services (EMS) to expedite access to the lifesaving devices. Bystanders receive guidance from 911 operators to use the AED upon delivery.

The initiative targets the critical time gap in out-of-hospital cardiac arrests, where, according to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 occur nationwide each year, with survival rates below 10%.

The drones fly directly—unhindered by traffic—at speeds up to 40 mph, aiming to deliver the AEDs in under 4 minutes, compared to the typical 6 to 10 minutes for EMS arrival. Researchers hope the findings will help expand the approach nationwide.

Article Icon 1Court Program Fights Human Trafficking

A Cumberland County court program that provides support to survivors of human trafficking has helped more than 100 survivors through individualized mental health treatment, addiction recovery, and long-term assistance.

The court-led initiative is called WORTH, which stands for We Overcome Recidivism Through Healing, and is presided over by Judge Toni King. WORTH has served survivors ages 14 to 57 throughout the county—considered a hotspot for trafficking—who have experienced coercion, force, and abuse.

WORTH's goal is to reduce recidivism and foster independence among participants, who receive comprehensive clinical assessments and personalized plans to address trauma and barriers to recovery.

January is recognized as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, with a series of events taking place to raise public awareness. The first event is scheduled for Thursday in Fayetteville. Read more details here.

A Pivotal Opportunity in Real Estate, Echoing 2008

A pattern is emerging that only happens once every 15 years or so. Typically, only real estate insiders are in a position to act on it in time.

The last time this happened, Blackstone created Invitation Homes and went on a $10 billion buying spree. It resulted in billions in profit, and Invitation Homes is now a public REIT.

Nearly two decades later, the market is aligning again. Another million-dollar operator is moving in. But this time, they're giving everyday investors a seat at the table.

Just like before, it's all about timing as the Federal Reserve makes a critical U-turn in its policy.

From 2022 to 2024, the Fed raised interest rates at a historic pace, contributing to 30-40% lower real estate prices today. With the Fed lowering interest rates, this could supply a major tailwind to real estate values going forward.

AARE has spent 20+ years preparing for this exact moment.

They've assembled a war chest of income-producing properties, with $2.75 billion+ in transactions.

Their experience gives AARE a strong advantage in today's market.

And they're still at ~$39 million valuation, while other REITs are valued 100x more.

Many of these REITs saw massive upside last cycle thanks to buying sprees of their own:

  • Prologis stock gained 950%

  • American Tower stock gained 910%

  • Crown Castle stock gained 1,300%

Now's the time to look for potential upside in addition to the classic REIT income.
