The state halted Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA) benefits after the federal government agreed to resume paying two-thirds of promised SNAP benefits to Commonwealth recipients.

The governor's office said it expects the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits to be processed by Thursday.

The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to allow it to halt full SNAP payments after an appeals court held on Sunday evening that the federal government must make the promised food stamps distributions.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin rolled out VENA last week to support the more than 850,000 Virginians who are on SNAP. "Our top priority has been to ensure that every Virginian facing food insecurity knows that we are doing everything in our ability to provide food assistance," Youngkin said.

Article Icon 1West Virginia Senator Wants Virginia Counties

A state senator in West Virginia introduced a resolution inviting 27 counties in the Old Dominion to split off and become part of the Mountain State instead.

The invitation was issued by Senator Chris Rose, a Republican from Monongalia County, West Virginia. He wrote that the counties he named—along with three invitees from Maryland—share "a strong Appalachian heritage, rural lifestyles, and a focus on individual liberties."

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey had already invited Virginians to relocate to his Republican-dominated state if they're not happy with the outcome of last week's elections, when Democrats retook control of the Commonwealth's statewide offices.

Approval would be required in both state legislatures and in Congress before any counties could jump states.

Veterans are being honored around the state in many ways today. In Richmond, the Virginia War Memorial hosts its annual Commonwealth's Veterans Ceremony at 3 p.m., including a tribute to Virginia Blue Star families.

The Hampton Roads area offers ceremonies in Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Newport News (at the Virginia War Museum).

Veterans who want to write their story down for relatives can do so today by using a free Words of Veterans book voucher funded by a grant from the Virginia Department of Veterans Services.

Mount Vernon is offering free admission all day to all active duty, former, or retired military personnel, as is Colonial Williamsburg.

There is also a rifle salute from the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, as well as ceremonies in Falls Church, at Arlington Cemetery, and a parade in Manassas.
