Trump Admin Changes Wolf Rules

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) told Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) this month it can no longer import gray wolves from Canada, potentially hindering the agency’s reintroduction plans.

New wolves must come from the Northern Rockies states, Trump-appointed USFWS Director Brian Nesvik told CPW in the Oct. 10 letter, citing a federal endangered species rule.

CPW argues that the rule doesn’t apply to wolves from Canada, where the species has been delisted. The agency had planned to release 10 to 15 more Canadian wolves this winter.

Three of the six permitted states have declined to help with Colorado’s wolf program. CPW says it’s evaluating “all options” to support further releases.

School Accused of Religious Discrimination

A Colorado Springs high school senior claims her school violated the First Amendment by not allowing her to decorate a personalized, paid parking space with faith-based imagery.

Rampart High School has a tradition of letting seniors pay to reserve and paint a parking space. Sophia Shumaker, a Christian, wanted to paint her spot with a shepherd tending sheep and a Bible verse.

According to a demand letter sent by First Liberty, a legal group representing Shumaker, school officials rejected her design because of a policy prohibiting religious messages.

First Liberty argues the policy is unconstitutional and inconsistent across the district. It requests that the school approve Shumaker’s design and rescind the policy by Oct. 31.

Keystone Beats A-Basin in Race to Open

Keystone Resort kicked off its 2025-2026 season Saturday afternoon, narrowly beating out Arapahoe Basin as the first ski resort in North America to open for the winter.

This is the first time since 1997 Keystone has claimed the title, the resort said. A-Basin, often the earliest to open, fell in close behind, beginning operations Sunday morning.

Before either resort opened, the season's first skier-triggered avalanche occurred near Treasury Mountain, a peak on the Western Slope, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.

Keystone and A-Basin both plan to continue snowmaking and open more terrain as conditions allow. Here’s a list of other Colorado resorts’ tentative opening dates.
