What did former FBI Director Jim Comey ask people to do after his indictment, which blew past all the norms of the criminal justice system and appears to have been delivered in response to the president’s demand for it? Comey asked people to vote. It’s increasingly clear that our best way out of the deep trouble our country is in is working to ensure free and fair elections where people who believe in democracy turn out in record numbers. If you want to have a serious conversation about protecting our elections and making sure the vote in 2026 is as free and fair as possible, then Hannah Fried is who you need to talk with. Hannah is the Executive Director of All Voting is Local. All Voting’s mission is to fight voter suppression and advance pro-voter policies at the state and local level, ensuring that all Americans, particularly Black, Brown, Native American, and other historically marginalized communities, have their voices heard. Hannah has the right resume for the job. She served as the National Director and Deputy General Counsel for Voter Protection on Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. In 2012, she served as the Voter Protection Director for President Obama’s reelection effort in Florida, and before that, she was the Deputy Director and Deputy Counsel for Voter Protection at the Democratic National Committee. Hannah served with the Obama campaign’s voter protection team during the 2008 primaries and joined the advance staff for the general election in June 2008. Hannah has also spent time in government service, at both the Department of Justice and the Environmental Protection Agency. She is a graduate of Williams College and of Harvard Law School. As we turn our attention to the midterm elections and begin to consider what roadblocks the Trump administration may put in place to interfere with free and fair elections, we’ve been getting perspectives from different voting rights and election law experts on the challenges we face. Hannah’s is uniquely helpful because she works in key states, has an understanding of what’s happening in all of them, and most importantly, is preparing to run a ground game to ensure Americans can vote—no matter who they want to vote for. That’s what’s essential about America: Who you vote for is a political choice, but your right to vote is fundamental. Any politician who wants to take it away from you doesn’t belong anywhere near elective office or political power. Tonight, we learn from Hannah and get a sense of what role each of us can play. “Five Questions” is a periodic feature for paid subscribers, my way of thanking those who are able to support this work and make it possible for me to devote the necessary time and resources to it.
