The Jim Acosta Show with Joyce Vance James Glancy and Elise LabottA recording from Joyce Vance and Jim Acosta's live video
I had the chance to join Jim Acosta this afternoon for a wide-ranging discussion that went from the Epstein files, to the Republican Party’s walk away from its long held views about Russia and Reagan’s “Evil Empire,” to Trump’s efforts to normalize putting the military on American streets and what we expect the Supreme Court to make of it when Trump’s power grab comes to them for review. If you missed us live, I hope you’ll take a look at the video above. And yes— thanks to all of you who noticed, and reached out to ask—that is, in fact, my knitting, which I forgot was bundled up behind me when I joined Jim. The conversations this week are important, and I appreciate all of you who made time to join. If you haven’t seen it yet, I wrote earlier today about Trump’s post on Truth Social early this morning and the sustained threat he wants to pose to our ability to hold free and fair elections next year. It’s an important post and I hope you’ll make time for it. “Voters choose their elected officials—and the policies they want them to pursue—through free and fair elections, where each of us has the right to vote. It’s up to Republicans to compete for those votes in the marketplace of ideas. Trump doesn’t get to dictate the outcome of our elections. But Trump wants to be a dictator—that’s abundantly clear in this post.” This is the same president who broke away from his meeting with our allies, and with brave Ukraine, which is fighting for its freedom, for a 40-minute chat with Vladimir Putin this afternoon. If, like me, you’re midway through re-reading 1984, I’m sure it’s hitting on all cylinders with you. “The best books, he perceived, are those that tell you what you know already,” Orwell writes. Sometimes, a book seems to serendipitously express the thoughts we’ve been mulling over in our heads. Seeing them in print, perhaps from a slightly different perspective or more compelling expressed than our own, can help to reinforce them. Orwell, in many ways, confirms that we are not being alarmist or silly to take the threat to our democracy seriously. If you’re reading, I’d love to know what you’re thinking about and taking away from 1984. We’re in this together, Joyce You're currently a free subscriber to Civil Discourse with Joyce Vance .
