No newsletter tonight. I’ve been in the studio this week, recording my forthcoming book, Giving Up Is Unforgivable: A Manual For Keeping A Democracy, so those of you lovely people who want to listen to it instead of reading it will be able to on October 21 when it’s released. Many thanks to all of you who have already preordered in either form! I’m going to take the night off and turn in early. Recording my book has been my first real opportunity to assess how it holds up to everything Trump has been throwing at our democracy since I finished writing it. I’m still firm in my conviction that we cannot and should not give up, and that our rule of law, our history, and our culture will help us chart a successful path forward. If you’re in one of the cities my publisher is sending me to when the book is released, I hope you’ll come to my book talk and say hi! I’d love to get to sign your book in person. Earlier this week I engaged in the most profound act any of us can engage in as Americans: I voted. It was a local election—only the mayoral race and the race for city council member in my district were on the ballot. I voted late in the day, and to my surprise, the parking lot at the library where I vote was almost full. The poll worker who greeted me and took my name had a twinkle in her eye—she knew she was part of something important. There is nothing like being in a room full of Americans who are voting, because they understand that elections are our superpower.
