If you weren’t able to catch us live earlier this evening, stop what you’re doing right now and listen to Alabama Congressman Shomari Figures. One of my girlfriends texted me as soon as it was over, “Awesome Substack interview!!! I am now a fan of Shomari.” You may not already be familiar with Alabama’s newest member of Congress, but you’re going to want to be after seeing this. Shomari has an unusual willingness to speak frankly about our politics. He’s pragmatic, but he’s not a defeatist. And he shares the kind of wisdom that can only come from someone who has worked in all three branches of government—he held high-level jobs in the White House, the Justice Department, and as a Senate staffer, and served as a law clerk to a federal judge. I left our conversation feeling freshly optimistic. This was one of the best assessments I’ve heard of what’s wrong, what’s right, and how we get through this. Instead of just telling us the next election is the most important one of our lives, he explains why that’s the case. Alabama 2, Shomari’s district, is the district that was created after the Supreme Court invalidated the Alabama legislature’s maps as an unconstitutional gerrymander under the Voting Rights Act. That makes it all the more appropriate for us to speak with him this week, as we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Act and Shomari discusses the bill to reinvigorate the Act introduced by his colleague Terri Sewell, whose district includes Selma. You don’t get to say this often coming from Alabama, but tonight, I feel so proud of our elected representatives! I’m grateful to the Congressman for taking time out of his busy schedule to join us this evening.
