Off-Duty State Police Officer Involved in Shooting

Virginia State Police are investigating a deadly shooting at the home of an off-duty special agent in Virginia Beach.

A 40-year-old man apparently attempted to break into the officer's home on Sunday, leading to a struggle. The special agent fired several shots from his service weapon, fatally wounding the intruder.

The officer was treated for minor injuries and released. Witnesses reported hearing between four and six shots during the altercation.

As is standard, the agent was placed on administrative leave for the duration of the investigation.

Body Found in State Park

Two bicyclists found the remains of a woman's body under a freshly cut fallen tree in High Bridge Trail State Park near Prospect on Saturday morning.

State police and local law enforcement agencies are cooperating to investigate the case, which is being treated as a suspicious death.

Authorities have not disclosed details about the woman's identity or cause of death.

Virginia's Top High Schools

Northern Virginia dominated this year's U.S. News list of the top high schools in the Commonwealth.

Eight of the 10 leading schools were in the region, with seven of those in Fairfax County. The high school in Falls Church City and two in the Richmond City Public Schools system were also ranked in the top 10.

A magnet school, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, led the list and was ranked No. 5 nationally. The other Fairfax County schools in the rankings were traditional public schools.

Schools were ranked based on criteria including college readiness, as measured by the number of students who take Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams.
