Five Questions with UCLA Law Professor Richard L. HasenWhat we need to know about the coming electionRichard L. Hasen is the Gary T. Schwartz Endowed Chair in Law, Professor of Political Science (by courtesy), and Director of the Safeguarding Democracy Project at UCLA School of Law. He is an internationally recognized expert in election law, writing as well in the areas of legislation and statutory interpretation, remedies, and torts. His op-eds and commentaries have appeared in many publications, including The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Politico, and Slate. Hasen also writes the often-quoted Election Law Blog, a great source of analysis on election law cases, and you can find him on Bluesky, where he is @rickhasen.bsky.social. Hasen has also testified before Congress and filed amicus briefs in critical voting rights cases like Moore v Harper, the 2022 North Carolina case where the Court rejected the independent state legislature theory. As we turn our attention to the midterm elections and begin to consider what roadblocks the Trump administration may put in place to interfere with free and fair elections, I wanted to get Rick’s perspective on the challenges we may face. Most importantly, I wanted to ask what he thinks we can and should be doing about it. “Five Questions” is a periodic feature for paid subscribers, my way of thanking those who are able to support this work and make it possible for me to devote the necessary time and resources to it.
