Five Districts Defy Feds, SpaceX Objects, and a Record-Setting Pony

The federal Department of Education said it will start suspending federal funding for schools in the Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William districts. Last month, its Office of Civil Rights told the districts that their policies violate Title IX's ban on sex discrimination.

The federal Department of Education said it will start suspending federal funding for schools in the Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William districts. Last month, its Office for Civil Rights told the districts that their policies violate Title IX's ban on sex discrimination.

The Trump administration ordered all five districts to act by August 15 to rescind policies that allow students to use the bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice based on "gender identity" rather than sex at birth.

"We disagree with the Department of Education's interpretation of Title IX, and we have notified them that we disagree with them, and we are happy...to have further discussions on why we disagree," the head of Prince William's school board said after the group voted against compliance.

The districts say they are complying with state law, which differs from current federal policy.

Article Icon 1SpaceX Objects to Virginia Broadband Plan

SpaceX objected to Virginia's $613 million high-speed internet proposal, which would utilize the company's Starlink service for just 5,579 of the 133,000 locations where the state plans to use federal subsidies to install broadband services.

The company, owned by Elon Musk, called the proposal "a massive waste of federal taxpayer money" and said the state "has put its heavy thumb on the scale in favor of expensive, slow-to-build fiber bias over speedy, low-cost, and technology-neutral competition."

SpaceX wrote in a letter to the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development that Starlink could serve almost every eligible household for $60 million.

Virginia allocated more than 80 percent of its proposed funding to projects that deliver internet services through fiber rather than satellites, with officials factoring in that fiber is more effective in areas with extensive tree coverage.

Article Icon 1Virginia Beach Calls for Less Vulgarity

The Virginia Beach City Council unanimously approved a resolution asking retailers to stop prominently displaying merchandise, including T-shirts and shorts, with vulgar messages.

"The proliferation of such displays creates an unwelcoming environment for the very families to whom the city markets itself and the city's residents," the resolution stated.

The request is voluntary and echoes a similar request made back in 1992. It's not a ban on such clothing, but a formal request that retailers move it to the back of their stores.

At least one store manager insisted his shop, Ocean 11, will keep its risque clothing front and center. "The new generation, they like this so much," Adam Desouki said.
