The U.S. economy grew at a 3.3% annual rate in the second quarter, stronger than both the government's initial 3.0% estimate and Wall Street's 3.1% forecast, thanks to resilient consumer spending and a sharp drop in imports. Consumer spending rose 1.6%, while a key measure of domestic demand—final sales to private domestic purchasers—climbed to 1.9%. On the import side, economists say some of the 2nd quarter growth was driven by companies accelerating their imports earlier in the year to beat tariffs, lowering costs this quarter. The third quarter is tracking near 2.2% so far. | Feds Eye Chicago Naval Base for ICE Federal officials are in talks to use Naval Station Great Lakes near Chicago to support immigration detention operations, border czar Tom Homan said Thursday. The Department of Homeland Security has contacted the military base about providing facilities, infrastructure, and logistical support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Homan said discussions are ongoing and that a large contingent of ICE agents could be deployed for an operation in downtown Chicago, though no timeline was given. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have both voiced opposition, saying Chicago doesn't need the military to help with immigration. | List: Nations with Highest Wealth per Person A new global wealth report shows Switzerland leading the world in average wealth per adult at $687,000, followed by the U.S. at $621,000 and Hong Kong at $601,000. In terms of median wealth—where half the people have more and half less—Luxembourg ranks first at $395,000, with Australia and Belgium also near the top. The U.S., by comparison, places 15th on the median list at $124,000. Globally, average wealth per person rose 4.6% in 2024, with financial hubs and developed economies dominating the rankings.
