Three Pittsylvania County deputies were injured by shrapnel when a suspect opened fire as they were attempting to serve warrants in the Pittsville area near Gretna.

The suspect, James Andru Lehnerd, was eventually taken into custody after a long standoff and charged with felony attempted aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer.

The deputies are recovering. "All three are well. Of course, they're shaken up," Pittsylvania County Sheriff Michael W. Taylor said.

State police will investigate the incident.

The Loudoun County School Board voted 6-3 not to comply with a demand by the U.S. Department of Education that it change its policies on whether students must use bathrooms and locker rooms that match their sex at birth.

The board's vice chair, Anne Donohue, said that while the district "would be open to further discussion with the Office for Civil Rights, LCPS is unable to agree to the terms of the proposed resolution agreement at this time."

The federal government says Loudoun's policy conflicts with Title IX and creates "a direct tension between federal agency guidance and binding judicial authority." The Trump administration is threatening to pull $50 million in federal funding unless the district complies.

Some parents at the meeting criticized the board. "You put the most vulnerable at risk. English learners, specifically at Title I schools...depend on federal funds, which we would receive if you certified the end of DEI," one warned.

The Virginia Police Benevolent Association (VAPBA) endorsed Abigail Spanberger for governor over Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. It's the first time VAPBA has backed a Democratic candidate for governor since 2009.

"As a Member of Congress, she repeatedly voted to increase funding for local police departments and sheriff's offices," Joe Woloszyn, the president of VAPBA, explained in a statement.

Down the ticket, the police group said it supports Republican lieutenant governor candidate John Reid and incumbent Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares.

The Virginia Police Benevolent Association represents about 11,000 law enforcement officers across the Commonwealth.
