Before I recap our get together last night, some news: Trump Gets More Bad Inflation News - On Tuesday one measure of inflation, the Consumer Price Index’s Core Inflation gauge, came in hotter than experts expected. Today a second measure of inflation, the Producer Price Index (PPI), came in way hotter than expected. Both sets of data come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. From CNBC:
As with the CPI, the PPI was declining when Trump came to office and now it is rising again. Trump’s economic agenda - particularly the tariffs - has re-ignited inflation. Period. Hard stop. He has spectacularly betrayed the central promise of his campaign to lower prices and make things better for working people.
Time To Impeach and Remove Bobby Kennedy - Our friends at Stand Up For Science launched a campaign to Impeach and remove Bobby Kennedy. I have signed the petition and hope you will too. Hopium will be joining this fight to bring attention to the incredible assault on science and our public health Kennedy and his allies are prosecuting now. This is a very good “do” for calls to Congress - “I expect that you will be working to impeach and remove this dangerous quack from the government and protect the health of the American people.”

Here is some of what we discussed in my initial presentation and the Q & A that followed: Finding A Higher Gear - As Trump’s dictatorial ambitions grow, so must our ambitions grow to mitigate the escalating damage he’s doing and win back power. In our redistricting battle these past few weeks, led by Gov. Newsom, Gov. Pritzker, Dem Leader Jeffries, DNC Chair Martin and Texas Dems, our pro-democracy movement found a higher gear. We need to keep going now, and keep reaching higher, keep demanding more of ourselves and our leaders so we can meet this unprecedented moment, together. Now, I believe, it is time to unite our pro-democracy movement around at least four clearly stated missions now. We must create more clarity around who we are and what we fighting for: Fight For Democracy And Freedom - We will fight for democracy, for Ukraine, for Europe, for NATO, for our own national security and sovereignty, for maintaining American leadership of the global rules-based order that our party imagined and built after WWII. We will oppose Putin, the selling out of Ukraine and the West, of Trump’s tearing down of the American-led rules based “Four Freedoms” global order and his abandonment of the Constitutional order here in America. End The Inflationary, Destructive And Illegal Tariffs - We will fight to end Trump’s terrible tariffs that are raising prices on every day Americans, slowing the US and global economies, shifting the tax burden from the wealthy to all of us, harming our farmers and small businesses, angering our allies and dramatically undermining the American-led rules based global order. While doing harm these tariffs are also illegal and unconstitutional, the greatest abuse of power by an American President in our history. Together, we must roll them back. Block The Creation Of An Unaccountable Political Police Force Loyal To Trump - We will fight to block the rancid and dangerous expansion of ICE and Trump’s illegal use of the military to forge for himself an unaccountable domestic political police force loyal to only to him and not the Constitution. Need to be all in on this one peeps. Stand Up For Science, Higher Ed, Our Public Health - We will fight to stop the ongoing assault on science, higher education, and our public health. We will oppose the escalating attacks on our universities, the gutting of our global scientific leadership, the dangerous undermining of vaccines and preventative health, and the cutting of the ACA and Medicaid. These authoritarian attacks are making our country poorer, our companies less able to compete, are dramatically undermining the health of the American people and violate our cherished First Amendment rights. As we have fought Trump’s Congressional seat grab we must now fight for these four objectives (or perhaps others) with at least the same level of intensity, organization and purpose. Trump is the national emergency, and it is time for our leaders to act that way and together keep raising their game.  Congressional Dems are going to have to accept that their leadership offices must now run 24/7/365. Teams can be rotated in on weekends and during breaks to spread responsibility for necessary public engagement with Trump. Additional comms/political staff can be hired, redeployed. Time now. Thu, 14 Aug 2025 11:45:07 GMT View on BlueskyTrump Is Weak, Not Strong - Trump’s deepening descent into madness and authoritarianism comes after months of him growing deeply aware that things are not going as planned; he is incredibly unpopular; and there is far more resistance to him and his rancid agenda of sabotage, plunder and betrayal than he expected. Lower courts have proved to be an extraordinary bulwark against his lawlessness; his policies have slowed the economy and re-ignited inflation despite his misguided faith in his wrecking ball econ agenda; deporting 10-15m people has proved a lot harder than they anticipated; the House Rs broke with Trump on Epstein and voted to subpoena the full files; no nation agreed to a trade deal in those initial 90 days, and Trump still has yet to negotiate a single comprehensive deal; he and his agenda are remarkably unpopular; the wars have not ended as he promised; many millions have marched; we continue to overperform in special and local elections, and the fall elections look promising.
He is angry/frustrated at his worsening economy and rising prices; his unpopularity; the threat of Epstein and the return of rancid past; at the nations of the world; at the courts; and so like some villain in a movie, he rages, escalates, lashes out, punishes. He besieged LA and now DC; he spitefully threw higher tariffs on all our major trading partners last week; he keeps grinding our world-leading universities into the ground; he is building himself a big ballroom so thousands can waltz in front of the new czar; he has clownishly made himself the host of the annual Kennedy award ceremonies; he is forcing the American people to build him a plane equal to his obvious greatness; he is banishing his critics from television; he is attempting a Putinist hostile takeover of our all our major chip manufactures; he imperiously fired the BLS Director, and is savaging Fed Chair Powell daily. He is escalating, growing more wild and dangerous because he is weak, not strong; failing, not succeeding; losing, not winning. For as history will document he is a villain, not a hero and we cannot for one moment lose sight of how fundamentally comical and ridiculous this all is - as well as dangerous, of course.
He continues to seek out outrageous ways to prove his STRENGTH and POWER and MANHOOD for it is, in fact, lacking. Something I believe he is acutely aware of through his terrible poll numbers, his declining health, and the way reality, the courts, the Epstein files, the American people and the nations of the world keep refusing to bend the knee. As I wrote yesterday all of this creating a vicious cycle of a failing strongman. The longer he is unable to restore his STRENGTH the more desperate he grows and the more dangerous he becomes. And here we are. With the National Guard illegally and preposterously patrolling the streets of Washington, DC.
Finally, what is perhaps most remarkable of all, it has become clear that his Administration really only has one aim - to make the big blubbery baby man feel STRONG. Whether what they do is good for America or legal/Constitutional no longer appears to be considerations in their decision making. It has all become about him, and never, not for one moment, about us. Which is why we need to…..
