Here at Daily Stoic, July is Epictetus Month, in honor of the former slave who shaped the minds of presidents and kings, and there's never been a better time to go deeper in your studies.
If you truly want to understand Epictetus' Discourses—to move beyond the quotes and into the mindset of the man who lived them—we've created something for you:
No matter what we're going through, we always retain the power to respond with virtue, with humor, with grace, to take wisdom from it. That's real strength. That's real freedom.
In a recent video on theDaily Stoic YouTube channel, Ryan Holiday speaks on the everlasting impact of Rome's most unexpected philosopher: Epictetus.
"Epictetus, a slave, a man who is banished by an earlier emperor for being a 'subversive' philosopher, somehow ends up teaching two emperors and is still influencing people all over the world 2,000 years later. It is an incredible sort of wormhole. It is an incredible break in the system where someone of such powerlessness has so much power over themselves and influences others with so much power as well."
In a recent episode of The Daily Stoic Podcast, Ryan Holiday speaks with writer Rutger Bregman on the monetary and social value of our jobs, and his idea of the "reverse welfare society":
"In some respects, I think that we live in this kind of reverse welfare society. The story we're being told is that the people who create the most value are at the top, right? They earn a lot of money, they pay more in taxes, and then it trickles down. But I think it's the other way around. If the "bottom" of society or the middle classes — the teachers, the care workers, the nurses — go on strike, then we're in trouble. They're the strongest shoulders that carry us all."

WHAT RYAN HOLIDAY IS READING:
"The secret is to make peace with walking around in a world where we recognize that we are not sure and that's okay. As we learn more about how our brains operate, we recognize that we don't perceive the world objectively. But our goal should be to try."
