But how do you know what that right thing is? That's where the final virtue, wisdom comes in. You have to study and learn and experience. No one ever became excellent by chance, the Stoics said…so if you want to be courageous and disciplined and ethical, you gotta do the work.
In a recent video on theDaily Stoic YouTube channel, Ryan Holiday shares the Stoic strategy for overcoming bad habits: confronting them early.
"Steer clear of these habits in the way a gambling addict doesn't go to Las Vegas. Cross the things early, nip them in the bud. Notice the warning signs, notice the grumblings, the aversions and listen to that voice. Head it off at the past. Solve it in advance and put yourself in a position where you don't need superhuman willpower, where you don't need strength and perseverance and the inner citadel."
In a recent episode of The Daily Stoic Podcast, Ryan Holiday speaks with journalist Chris Hayes on virtue signaling, the ethos of mainstream media, and the individual nature of modern consumption:
"What's so crazy about the landscape that we occupy now is how individuated it all is. Your specific predilections, the things you want to be true can be found pretty quickly with the algorithm. Through this algorithm, this sorting mechanism, [they] know how to compel your attention."

WHAT RYAN HOLIDAY IS READING:
"So let honesty be your North Star. In every interaction, every decision, every moment, let us ask ourselves: Am I being true? Am I aligning my words and my actions with my deepest values and beliefs? Am I using my voice and my influence to champion honesty, authenticity, and integrity?"
