There are other 'izations' that tempt, infect, corrupt and change us, aren't there? Especially these days. Radicalization.Polarization.Dehumanization. Corporatization. Algorithmization.
There are forces out there, just as tempting as power, that can cut us off from our values, from truth, from other people, from what matters. It takes work to resist them, to counteract them, and to rise above them. The incentives they offer, the comfort or clarity they might represent, the ease with which we can fall prey to them—this is a siren's call.
We must, as Marcus writes in Meditations, be ever vigilant in the fight "to be the person that philosophy tried to make us." We have to stay kind, stay good. We must avoid tribalism, avoid reducing people to items on a spreadsheet. We have to maintain our curiosity and open-mindedness. We cannot allow extremism to take hold in us. We must continue to think for ourselves, to cling to our humanity, to see the good and dignity in others—no matter what is happening in the world or acting on us through our devices.
If we don't actively resist these forces, we don't just lose our way. We lose who we are.
That's why Daily Stoic created our How to Read Meditations Guide, which is designed to equip you with the very best tools and wisdom Stoicism has to offer straight from the best example of its virtues.
