(No dis to my human friends. You know who you are, and I love you!) Bella, our German Shepherd, continues to think she is the guardian of the chicken flock, which is a very good thing, because we have hawks and the occasional owl. But she makes me laugh when she shares their morning dose of fresh herbs from the garden. We love Pickles. Really, everyone loves Pickles. She’s just the coolest chicken. Toot, the white chicken, is a little more standoffish; you can see it in the expression on her face! But she lays beautiful blue eggs, so we forgive her. Red is one of the prettiest chickens I’ve ever seen, even when shaggy from molting. Most chickens look horrible in the middle of a molt, but not Red. I love the tail feathers that are so black that they’re green. Clementine is another beautiful girl. She spends a lot of time trying to accumulate a clutch of eggs so she can get to work hatching them. Sadly for her, I am quite good at outsmarting her these days. Esther is very dainty and wants everyone to know that she’s the prettiest chicken. Omeleta gets more than her fair share of croissants. To give her her due, she’s also a variety of chicken, Orpingtons, that grow much larger than the rest of our girls, and she is as sweet as she is humongous. Tofu desperately wants to be part of the flock. The chickens are willing to tolerate him, but they don’t include him like they do Bella. He is tranquility incarnate, such a lovely boy. I’d like to come back as a Maine Coon Cat in my next life and spend my days sleeping in the sun. Hope you’re finding some time to recharge your “spiritual tank” as one of my friends calls it. This coming week feels like it’s going to be pivotal in a number of ways. We will be ready.
