Gov. Glenn Youngkin submitted the VA Rural Vitality plan, a blueprint to improve rural health care, to the federal government.

The Commonwealth is asking for $1 billion in federal Rural Health Transformation funding to "strengthen our workforce, expand innovative care models, and deliver the tools communities need to live healthier, more productive lives," Youngkin announced.

According to the governor, more than half of Virginia's rural areas don't have enough health care providers, while chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and hypertension in the Commonwealth exceed national averages.

The plan aims to modernize health care delivery and invest in innovation in rural areas.

The Virginia aquaculture industry experienced a significant increase in direct farm sales, rising from $53 million prior to the COVID pandemic to $81 million last year, according to a new report.

The Virginia Shellfish Aquaculture Situation and Outlook Report is the first such survey in more than five years. It was produced by scientists at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, which is affiliated with the College of William & Mary.

The report estimates that roughly 700 people now work in the aquaculture industry, up from 480 in 2018.

"The industry has been resilient," Shellfish Aquaculture Specialist Karen Hudson said. "It's still going strong, and that's a positive."
