What happens when you put a former Republican from Mississippi together with a Democrat from Alabama to talk about a new book? The answer should be obvious—they veer completely off course and have a searing conversation about what has gone wrong with the Republican Party. This is among the most honest and introspective conversations I’ve had, getting at the question of how the country could have possibly ended up where it is. I’m grateful to Lincoln Square for inviting me to speak with Stuart Stevens, and I’m hoping he’ll forgive me for turning the tables and asking him a few questions, even though he was supposed to be interviewing me. Stuart doesn’t let himself off easy, starting with the pre-9/11 “compassionate conservative” moment and discussing how it completely evaporated. Conversations like this are never easy, but they are important if we’re going to find our way back. I’ve been thinking about what we discussed all afternoon, and I’m getting ready to sit down and watch it again, so I wanted to share it with you all as well. We did manage to talk a bit about my book, Giving Up Is Unforgivable: A Manual For Keeping A Democracy, and I hope that if you haven’t had a chance to read it yet, you’ll pick up a copy today. You can watch the video of our conversation here. We’re in this together, Joyce You're currently a free subscriber to Civil Discourse with Joyce Vance .
